How To Grow An Accountancy Practice: Make Yourself Redundant

If you really want to grow an accountancy practice, it’s time to get out of there.

By Shane Lukas, Managing Director, AVN Inspiring Accountants

Most accountancy practice owners (and other business owners too) are hands-on. They’re highly involved in the day-to-day operations, making sure that everything gets done to their own high standard, often working harder than their team.

The trouble is that doing that puts a brake on growing the business. It can only grow as much as you have capacity.

If you’re stuck in this mindset of being a business operator, you need to make the shift to being a business owner.

The business owner mindset

It’s essential to understand the difference between being a busy operator and a strategic owner. Yes, the work needs to get done, but you don’t have to be the one who does it. Your clients are paying for a solution, not the person who provides it.

When you step back from the day-to-day, you free up your time for strategic thinking and developing new opportunities. You open doors to scale the business beyond your personal limits.

Systemise to grow your practice

The key to doing this successfully is to put robust systems in place. Well-planned and executed systems allow your team to deliver the same high quality work as if you had done it yourself. This creates a win-win for everyone. You’ll be able to delegate with confidence while your team can develop their skills and their roles within the firm.

Systemising your entire practice is undoubtedly a huge task. So start small. Identify one task that’s taking up your time and map out the process so someone else can follow it. Keep reviewing and refining with your team until you get it right.

Make yourself redundant

As you move away from working IN your business to working ON your business, you’ll have time (and energy) to focus on the strategies that will help your accountancy practice to grow.

If you want some help to put this into practice, I’m running a 1 day workshop for accountancy practice owners who want to get off the daily treadmill and grow their business. It’s called PracticeBoost – and it does what it says on the tin!
